Golden Horseshoe Education Supporting Transfusionists (GHEST) Symposium 2024

Sheena Scheuermann, Regional Project Coordinator, ORBCoN

The mission of GHEST is to promote education, research, and best practices in Transfusion Medicine throughout the Golden Horseshoe region. The model is a non-profit venture; therefore, the symposiums are held at minimal cost to participants.

This year’s event was held in Oakville, Ontario. The symposium was well attended with 114 registrants. We were very fortunate to have a patient speaker, who presented: From “Drug” to Blood Product – the Impact on Patients. We learned about Glassia and her personal journey with Alpha 1 Antitrypsin deficiency. A OnePath representative, presented the process flow to accessing Glassia for these patients.

A representative form Lakeridge Health presented “Managing homecare-Lab perspective challenges and solutions” which described some of the current challenges as well as potential solutions to the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory (TML) providing care for more and more home care patients and products. Two representatives for Hamilton Health Sciences provided information regarding the Medical Laboratory Assistant role in transfusion medicine and how this role has evolved at Hamilton TML.

Based on 2023 feedback, a technologist from a rural setting and a technologist from an urban setting were invited to discuss what occurs on a daily basis in their TML.

The event concluded with a transfusion reaction case study presentation. Including more case studies in the program has been a suggestion from attendees in the past.

Thank you to our sponsors Takada, Grifols, CSTM and ORBCoN! Once again a huge thank you to the speakers and organizing committee for another successful GHEST event. Presentations will be posted on the ORBCoN website .
