Bedside Audit Report June 2011

The purpose of this project was to raise the awareness of the importance of performing such audits and how this activity contributes to increased patient safety through improved compliance with established procedures. A secondary goal of this project was to gather baseline data on the compliance rate of hospital practice in Ontario with current standards of practice, for the safe administration of blood components. The periodic audit of blood transfusions helps hospital personnel ensure procedures developed to maintain the safety of the process are being followed. This report summarizes the methodology and results of an audit of blood administration practices at the bedside in Ontario hospitals.
